WOMEN IN SCIENCE
Upcoming WISEST Deadlines and Events

The big party is over, but an Edmonton group dedicated to getting more women and other under-represented groups into science and scholarship has further plans on the horizon. In the wake of a successful 25th anniversary celebration, WISEST released its near-future schedule of events.

WISEST — which stands for Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology — is also looking further ahead, at what its next 25 years will look like. See story Wisest Celebrates Past Successes.

But for now, here’s what’s on tap.

  • Professional Speaker and Networking Series: SET-for-Success Series — celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of women in science, engineering and technology, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 4-5:30 p.m. (four events/year). RSVP via the WISEST website by Nov. 26. New attendees welcome. Speakers: Debra Greig, B.Sc. in computing science, CEO of ShirWin Knowledge and Learning Systems; Myka Osinchuk, executive director, Institute for Reconstructive Surgery and Medicine. Location: Heritage Lounge, Athabasca Hall, University of Alberta. Future meetings, on Jan. 28 and March 25, will be at the Faculty Club.

  • Early Career Researchers and Professionals Networking Series: WISER (Women in Science, Engineering, and Research) — Thursday, Dec. 4, 5:30-8 p.m. (six events/year) RSVP via WISEST website by Nov. 26 – new attendees welcome. Location: Heritage Lounge, Athabasca Hall, University of Alberta.

  • 25th Annual SET Conference — for young women in high schools from across Alberta interested in careers in science, engineering and technology. Saturday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. High school participants RSVP by mailed registration form by Dec. 1, as directed on the WISEST website. This annual one-day conference has been enjoyed by young women from high schools across Alberta, who come to the U of A to learn about university programs, experience science, and discover more about futures and career opportunities in science, engineering and technology. Role models from APEGGA and other professional organizations regularly volunteer their time at this event, mentoring young women and supporting their career interests.
